Intro

An app for things you want to remember.

Intro brings together notes, contacts, and groups, in context. It’s a personal network management tool. Keep track of people you meet, information you want to recall, and the links between them. Take quick notes, and link them to the relevant people, groups and other notes that make up their context. Then add detail over time.

Intro’s global timeline tab presents your notes, people and links you’ve updated in the app in a reverse chronological timeline, so you have quick access back to your most recent activity. Each note, person and group also have their own timeline of the things you’ve linked to that context.

Search by people’s physical characteristics. When you’ve added an avatar for a person (for instance, recording the person has wavy brown hair, glasses, and short stubble beard), you can search on physical characteristics as one more tool to help you identify people when you see out of context. Intro also provides a name-learning tool that lets you practice the names of your contacts through in a swipe-card format name learning tool. This tool is based on proven neuropsychological techniques of errorless learning and spaced retrieval. It’s remarkably effective at making a person’s name just pop into your head when you see them again.

Intro is a native iPhone and iPad app, with support for running the iPad app on Apple Silicon Macs. Users can choose to use Intro in isolation, or to sync selected people or all people between Intro and the Contacts app. Users can also seamlessly sync data between devices via iCloud if they choose to, or use the app standalone on any device. Intro does not send any data to servers operated by Intro Limited—the app is 100% privacy focussed and does not send any user data to servers operated by Intro Limited nor any third party.

Intro 2.0 was released on 16 September 2024, incorporating a major redesign, the addition of the timelines feature, and adding support for iPadOS. Intro originally launched on iOS on 14 February 2018. The app is available in all 157 countries in which the App Store operates.

How much does it cost?

Intro is free to download, and the contacts-management features of the app are always free to use. A one month free trial is available for the full version of the app, which requires an annual subscription of US$30. A Year Pass is available for $35 for users who prefer not to have an auto-renewing subscription.

A single subscription covers use of the app on all platforms the user wants to use, which will include a native macOS app in a future update (replacing the current iPad app on Apple Silicon). In the free version of Intro you can manage contacts, and continue to have the ability to access (and soon export) all data created during any previous subscription period.

Who made Intro?

Intro is an indie app made by Dr Duncan Babbage, an independent app developer based in Auckland, New Zealand. Duncan has always had significant problems with recognising faces, and even more with learning and recalling names. Some days, he couldn't even pull up the name of people he knew quite well. He got great at covering for it, but... maybe you know how terrible that feels at times. Duncan made Intro to try and help himself, and everyone else, to connect more effectively with people.

Duncan trained as a clinical psychologist in New Zealand. He practiced for 15 years as a clinical psychologist / neuropsychologist in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. In that time, he worked in child and adolescent services, adult mental health, psychogeriatric services, and had a particular focus on neuropsychological rehabilitation, particularly with older adults and after traumatic brain injury. Later, Duncan held a number of academic posts including as Director of the Centre for eHealth at Auckland University of Technology. He is well published in peer-reviewed international academic journals, and has given hundreds of research presentations to academic and professional audiences on technology, health and rehabilitation.

These days however he’s left all of that behind to focus full time on app development. Duncan is no longer registered as a psychologist, but draws on this background in his focus on using mobile technology to support cognitive functioning and wellness for everyone.

Duncan is available for media interviews. He is happy to discuss health technology, using technology to assist cognitive functioning, and/or to discuss the Intro app specifically. He is based in Auckland, New Zealand (UTC +13 hrs) but is available to schedule interviews at times that suit your timezone and your deadline.
